方小妹（于莉饰）和连长袁少林（马树超饰）是一对感情十分要好的恋人，当袁少林接到任务奔赴前线后，方小妹主动搬进了袁少林的家中，照顾他孤苦无依的老母亲。田静（萨仁高娃饰）是方小妹的好友，在某次去前线慰问归来后，她告诉方小妹找军人做对象就等于是守活寡，她自己则抛弃了恋人方华（张天喜饰），和电视台的记者吴安（汪粤饰）走到了一起。袁少林和方华是战友，在奋勇作战的过程中，方华不幸牺牲了，而在他的口袋里，袁少林找到了田静写给他的绝交信。战士们从前线归来了，在英雄报告团的大会上，方小妹再一次见到了袁少林，只不过后者坐在了轮椅上。
